Human laziness is a strength
Effort is painful, and pain drives improvement. Don't let AI hide the pain.
Good software engineers are lazy. A good engineer will refuse to do the same thing a 3rd time. Instead, they'll find a way to automate it or abstract it away so the 4th time or 400th requires little effort. The friction of manual effort is what leads to simpler, more maintainable systems.
Bad engineers will continue toiling away repetitively. And they'll do it slightly differently each time, precisely because it's not systematized.
Which engineer does AI mimic? In my experience, it's always been the second. AI will cheerfully continue a repetitive manual pattern until there are 10 different ways of doing the same thing. I've never seen it stop and question whether there's a better way.
When there's a gap between what a system needs to do and how it actually works, pain is the best signal for improving the system. So don't hide the signal.
